Summer Enrichment Camps

In the dead of winter talking about summer enrichment camps?  The Charlotte Empowerment Zone cannot effectively carry out its mission without Church, corporate, and civic (grants) support.  Therefore, this is a time of furiously planning for the “Shaping the Future” CEZ summer enrichment camp.

Chaplin Needed

Still Praying

IIt seems like a “Macedonian Call” – the requests from low income Crossroad Apts. and Silverstone Apts. in the gang-ridden Hidden Valley neighborhood to set up our fourth Empowerment Zone there. Because of the make-up of the residency in these apartment complexes, it is critical that the residential chaplain(s) be bi-lingual in Spanish. So far we have not found applicants with all needed qualifications so we simply trust God’s timing. The Chaplaincy (Zone Coordinator) job description and application are posted on our CEZ website (www.cezone.org).

Tutoring Rewards

The first week of February marks the end of the second quarter of CMS and posting children’s report cards. Our CEZ tutoring program rewards children for improving their grades and making the honor roll with a reward trip to Monkey Joes (who graciously partner with us to provide free entrance). During the first quarter, over half of the Oak Park Empowerment tutoring program qualified and attended. This quarter children from all three Empowerment Zones will participate, going on February 11th from 11 AM to 1 PM (also receiving lunch and recognition prizes from a CEZ sponsor). To join us on that day, please call Jeff for details.

Over 40% of economically disadvantaged children in Charlotte drop out of school by the 9th grade and 48% do not graduate from high school. By the fifth grade, these children are typically one to two grade levels behind in math/reading. For example at Reid Park Elementary (which serves Pressley Ridge Apartments) only 22.8% of the students were at grade level in the math this year.
